Hong Kong’s last major opposition party has announced its disbandment, marking another milestone in the city’s rapid political transformation. The decision comes after years of tightening controls under Beijing’s authority, leaving diminishing space for organized dissent within the territory’s formal political system.

Party leaders cited mounting legal risks and operational constraints as central to their decision. New laws and enforcement mechanisms have reshaped what political participation looks like, redefining boundaries that once allowed opposition voices to organize openly.
