Behind these curious names lies a reminder that nature often resists the neat categories we try to give it.

Take the creature known as the mountain chicken. The name conjures the image of a bird perched somewhere in the highlands. But in truth, this animal is neither bird nor fowl. It is a large frog found on Caribbean islands such as Dominica and Montserrat. Its name is believed to come from its taste, which locals once compared to chicken. Today, the amphibian is critically endangered, its unusual name a lingering echo of culinary history.

Then there is the guinea pig, a small rodent that has charmed households around the world. Despite the name, it is neither from Guinea nor related to pigs. Historians believe the name may have arisen from old trade routes or perhaps from the squealing sound the animal makes. In reality, guinea pigs originated in the Andes of South America, where they were domesticated thousands of years ago.

Some names arise from visual impressions rather than geography. The bearcat, for instance, sounds like a creature stitched together from two familiar animals. But this tree-dwelling mammal of Southeast Asia is neither a bear nor a cat. Known scientifically as the binturong, it belongs to the civet family. Its round face and heavy body may have suggested the comparison, though biologically it stands quite apart from both animals in its name.

A similar confusion surrounds the honey bear, more properly known as the kinkajou. Despite the cuddly nickname, it is not a bear at all. Instead, it is closely related to raccoons. The name likely emerged from its habit of occasionally raiding beehives and licking honey with its long tongue, though fruit actually makes up most of its diet.

The ocean holds its own linguistic puzzles. The whale shark, the largest fish in the sea, is not a whale but a shark. Its name reflects its immense size, which rivals that of some whales, as well as its gentle filter-feeding behavior. Yet beneath the name lies a cartilaginous fish, not a marine mammal.

Even the skies offer examples of mistaken identity. The flying fox sounds like a mythical hybrid, yet it is simply a large fruit bat with a fox-like face and reddish fur. These bats glide through tropical forests, sometimes with wingspans exceeding a meter, feeding on fruit and nectar rather than anything remotely fox-like.

Another well-known example swims through the oceans: the killer whale. Despite the dramatic name, this animal is actually the largest member of the dolphin family. Early sailors once called them “whale killers” for their hunting prowess, a phrase that gradually reversed itself over time.

Language has also mislabeled creatures beneath the waves and across the seafloor. The starfish, for instance, is not a fish at all. It belongs to a group of animals called echinoderms, relatives of sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Scientists now often prefer the term “sea star,” though the older name remains firmly rooted in everyday speech.

Elsewhere in the forest canopy glides the flying lemur, which neither flies nor belongs to the lemur family. Instead, it glides between trees using wide skin membranes and belongs to a distinct group of mammals called colugos.

And finally, there is the red panda, an animal that shares its name with the giant panda but not its close ancestry. In fact, the red panda represents the sole surviving member of its own evolutionary family, standing quietly apart from both bears and raccoons.

Seen together, these animals form a small gallery of linguistic accidents—creatures whose names reflect the curiosity, confusion, and imagination of the people who first encountered them. In many ways, these mismatches between name and nature tell a human story as much as a biological one.

Nature, after all, does not concern itself with our vocabulary. It simply continues to surprise us, quietly reminding us that the world is often more complex—and more interesting—than the names we give it.
