When Dumplings and Dreams Meet, What Stories Do Our Tables Tell?

In many cultures, food is more than nourishment; it carries stories, memories and hopes folded into every shared bite. During Lunar New Year celebrations, that truth becomes especially vivid — families gather around tables laden with dishes that speak of prosperity, reunion and renewal. This year, three Auckland food creators — each with their own culinary lens — offered a glimpse into the dishes that mean the most to them and their communities.

For Nic Chan, the kitchen is where family and tradition meld into play and innovation. Each Lunar New Year, her family holds what has become a joyful ritual: a dumpling competition that blends classic flavours with creative twists. Dumplings — symbols of wealth and luck — are both a nod to heritage and a canvas for playful reinterpretation. In past years, this competition has seen wildcards ranging from cinnamon-spiced fillings to cheeseburger-inspired versions, reflecting the way tradition can evolve while still honoring its roots.

Across her social feeds, Jasmine Kim keeps things simple and convivial. Her go-to for the New Year is kimchi pancakes — crisp, savoury, and easy to make at home. More than a recipe, the dish celebrates togetherness: the act of sharing pancakes around the table mirrors the spirit of family reunion that underpins the holiday. By using familiar ingredients that can be found at local supermarkets, Jasmine encourages others to make festive cooking accessible while still resonant with cultural warmth.

For Vanessa Zhao, the centrepiece is a dish steeped in symbolism: braised carp, known in Chinese culture as a “Dish of Abundance and Hope.” Traditionally served whole, the fish is not eaten entirely; leaving parts behind signifies a wish for surplus to carry into the year ahead. The carp’s place at the table — with head towards elders and tail towards the youngest — reflects reverence, continuity and generational respect. The dish’s rich aromas of soy, ginger and scallions evoke both comfort and aspiration.

Across these personal menus, there is a shared theme: food as a language of love, hope and cultural expression. Whether it’s playful dumplings, crisp pancakes or symbolic carp, each dish tells a story of celebration, memory and community. For many Aucklanders, and indeed across Aotearoa and beyond, the Lunar New Year dinner table becomes a tapestry of tradition and innovation — where old flavours meet new interpretations, and every meal carries a wish for good fortune in the months to come.
