When Data Centres Turn to Uranium

In the soft hum of servers that power our digital lives, one truth becomes clear: immense computing demands require more than clever code—they need relentless, reliable power. With that in mind, Google LLC has partnered with NextEra Energy, Inc. to revive the long-shuttered Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa—marking a rare restart of a U.S. nuclear facility and a bold statement on the future of energy for AI and data-centres.

The plant, Iowa’s only nuclear power station, was shut down in 2020 after 45 years of operation, following storm damage and economic pressures. Under the new agreement, Google will enter into a 25-year power-purchase deal for electricity from the 615-megawatt plant once it is restarted—targeted for the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approval.

This venture is more than an energy contract. It underscores how the burgeoning demands of AI, cloud services and data-centres are reshaping energy infrastructure. “Restarting Duane Arnold marks an important milestone… our partnership with Google not only brings nuclear energy back to Iowa, it also accelerates next-generation nuclear technology,” said NextEra’s CEO.

Looking deeper, the deal signals three things: first, a revival of nuclear power in the U.S. as a major baseload source of clean energy; second, tech giants like Google positioning themselves as energy infrastructure players rather than mere energy consumers; and third, a regional economic boost for the Midwest, with thousands of jobs and substantial investment projected.

Yet the road ahead isn’t free of obstacles. Restarting a nuclear plant requires regulatory approval, safety upgrades, transmission work, and approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission among others. While no fully-shuttered U.S. nuclear reactor has yet successfully restarted, this project may become the first.
