Power plants and factories beyond the city’s borders feed pollution into the regional air system. Even agricultural burning, though distant, contributes to a background load that rain alone cannot erase.

What unfolded over Delhi was a lesson in accumulation. Years of emissions have thickened the baseline, making the air slower to recover. Where rain once offered temporary clarity, it now barely dents the burden. The city breathes in layers, each season adding more weight.

Health experts warn that this persistence carries consequences. Prolonged exposure to fine particles increases respiratory and cardiovascular risks, especially for children, the elderly, and those with existing conditions. When even rain fails to provide relief, the window for recovery narrows.

The episode also underscores a larger truth about urban pollution. Solutions cannot rely on nature to compensate for human excess. Weather may mask the problem briefly, but it cannot solve one built into daily systems of movement, energy, and growth.

As the clouds cleared and the haze remained, Delhi returned to its routines under a familiar gray veil. The rain had done its part. The rest, the city now knows, cannot be washed away so easily.
