When American Services Accelerate, New Orders Rise While Businesses Navigate Higher Prices and Slower Hiring

The American economy often reveals its mood not in dramatic moments, but through the steady movement of restaurants, offices, financial firms, technology companies, and countless service businesses. In August, that movement quickened, with demand showing renewed strength even as prices and hiring offered a more complicated picture.

U.S. services sector activity increased during August, according to the Institute for Supply Management survey reported by Reuters. The nonmanufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 55.4 from 54.1 in July, signaling continued expansion in a sector that represents a large share of the American economy.

The strongest part of the report came from new orders. They reached their highest level in three and a half years, suggesting that customers and businesses were willing to spend despite an economic environment marked by uncertainty over inflation, interest rates, and supply chains.

Artificial intelligence spending was among the forces contributing to demand. Companies connected to technology and digital infrastructure have continued to invest heavily in services and equipment associated with the expansion of AI, creating activity that reaches well beyond the technology sector itself.

Yet beneath that strength, prices were moving higher. The survey's prices-paid index increased to 72.6, a level that points to substantial input-cost pressure for service businesses. Rising costs can eventually pass through to customers, potentially making the inflation picture more difficult for policymakers.

Supply chains also remained under strain. Supplier deliveries were slow for the 21st consecutive month, according to the survey, with geopolitical tensions and tariffs contributing to delays. For businesses, that means stronger demand does not necessarily translate into an equally smooth flow of materials and services.

Employment offered another contrast. The services employment index remained below the level associated with expansion, at 47.8. Companies appeared willing to meet stronger demand without significantly increasing hiring, reflecting caution over the broader economic outlook.

That cautious approach was also visible in other labor-market data released around the same period. U.S. private payrolls rose by 38,000 in August, below economists' expectations of 48,000, according to separate Reuters reporting. Education and health services added jobs, while manufacturing employment declined.

The combination leaves the American services economy in an unusual position: demand is firm, new orders are strong, but costs remain elevated and employers are not expanding their workforces at the same pace. For economists, that balance will be important in assessing whether current growth can continue without reigniting inflation.

August therefore closes with two different signals moving side by side. American businesses are receiving more orders, yet they are also confronting higher prices and restrained hiring. The coming economic data will show whether the strength seen in services can be sustained as companies and consumers move deeper into the second half of the year.
