When America Votes, Canada Listens

The border between Canada and the United States is a line on a map, but it has never been a wall. Goods, people, and ideas move across it with a familiarity born of geography and history. When American voters go to the polls on November 3, their choices will echo northward—not as interference, but as consequence, the natural reverberation of two economies woven tightly together.

The midterm elections will determine the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, told CTV's Your Morning that the outcome could significantly influence the trajectory of the tariff war and Donald Trump's posture toward Canada . Should Democrats perform well, he suggested, it would mean more pressure on Trump regarding the trade measures that have unsettled markets and supply chains.

Duss predicted that Democrats, currently in the minority in both chambers, could emerge with a majority. Even control of one chamber would give them the legislative agenda and the ability to call hearings, summon administration officials, and highlight the costs of the trade war . They could also exercise influence over budgets for various initiatives.

The tariffs themselves have already left marks. Reporting from the Washington Post, cited by Yonhap, noted that Republican candidates in key battleground states like Michigan, New Hampshire, and Maine have been distancing themselves from Trump's tariff policies, recognizing the economic damage in communities closely tied to Canada . In Port Huron, Michigan, a border city where Canadian shoppers once sustained local businesses, the mayor described the local economy as having "fallen" amid the trade tensions. The National Taxpayers Union estimated that tariff policies cost Michigan households an additional $5,619 per year compared to 2024 .

Trump has shown a willingness to adjust course when political pressure mounts. In late October, he conceded to dropping tariffs on some Canadian goods at the request of Maine's Republican Senator Susan Collins . But Duss cautioned that such gestures may change little for voters whose views on the cost of living are already settled.

The deeper question, as Duss framed it, is how a Democratic win might alter Trump's behavior. He described the president as someone who "overreacts" when challenged, viewing politics as "a kind of dominance display" . Should Republicans lose the midterms, Duss suggested, Trump's behavior could worsen rather than soften.

For Canada, the election is not an abstract exercise in foreign politics. It is a proximate reality, a reminder that the decisions made in Washington ripple through Canadian factories, farms, and family budgets. The relationship is not one of dependence but of deep interconnection—two neighbors whose fortunes remain, for better or worse, entangled.

Voting day is November 3. The results will be counted, and the consequences will be felt on both sides of the border.
