When a Joyride Ends in a Cornfield, What Do We Learn?

There is a peculiar kind of silence that follows a child's misadventure—a quiet that holds equal parts relief and bewilderment. In the early hours of a holiday Monday, two children slipped out of their home, took the family car, and drove into the darkness of an Ottawa Valley night. When the sun rose, what remained was a damaged vehicle in a cornfield, two unharmed children, and a community left to ponder how such a thing could happen.

Ontario Provincial Police say an officer on foot patrol in Pembroke's west end heard a vehicle doing burnouts shortly before 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving Monday. The information was broadcast to other officers, and the vehicle was located on Jean Avenue. When an officer attempted to stop it, the vehicle accelerated away. Officers did not pursue, following standard policy for safety reasons .

A short time later, police discovered the vehicle had left the road and crashed into a cornfield at the intersection of Jean Avenue and TV Tower Road. There was no one inside when officers arrived. About an hour later, the OPP Canine Unit located two youths nearby—an 11-year-old driver and a nine-year-old passenger. Neither had sustained any serious injuries .

The children were turned over to their parents. Police determined that the vehicle had been taken from a parent without their knowledge or consent. The parents and youths were informed that no charges would be pursued, because the youths are below the age of criminal responsibility. Under Canadian law, the Youth Criminal Justice Act does not apply to children under 12 .

The vehicle was towed from the field and sustained damage. No serious injuries were reported to either child. Police have not released further details about the family or the circumstances that led to the children taking the car .

For the parents, the night must have unfolded as a blur of confusion, fear, and eventual relief. For the officers involved, the outcome was one of the better ones they could hope for in such a situation—a crash with no injuries, children found safely, and a family reunited. Yet the incident also raises questions that no police report can fully answer: how did two children, one only nine years old, manage to take a vehicle and drive it undetected until they crashed?

The investigation has concluded, and no charges will follow. What remains is the quiet aftermath of a night that could have ended far differently—a cornfield, a damaged car, and two children who returned home to their parents.
