When a Homecoming Becomes a Scattering, Something Is Lost

There is a particular sadness when a celebration meant to gather a community instead scatters it into chaos. Homecoming is supposed to be a return—a moment when alumni and students share the same streets, the same songs, the same sense of belonging. But on Saturday in Guelph, Ontario, that gathering became something else: a crowd too large, a street too crowded, and a police response that ended with handcuffs and charges.

The unsanctioned party took place near the University of Guelph campus, on Chancellors Way, and police described the gathering as “significantly larger” than similar events in recent years. Officers responded to reports of objects being thrown, people climbing buildings, and shoplifting and vandalism at nearby businesses . The Service Tactics and Rescue Unit was called in to assist as the crowd escalated. Videos circulating online showed police placing individuals in handcuffs as they worked to control the situation .

Guelph police laid several criminal and provincial charges, including causing a disturbance and numerous alcohol-related offences. Emergency responders treated multiple people for injuries, including cuts and lacerations, and responded to a number of intoxication-related medical calls . Police said they continue to review reported incidents, video, and other evidence, and additional charges may be forthcoming .

University of Guelph President Rene Van Acker said in a statement that the school was “deeply disappointed” by what occurred and that the safety of students and neighbours had been put at risk. He noted that some of those involved in property damage and disruptive behaviour were not students of the university. “We are clear that this cannot happen again,” he said, adding that the school would review the incident and work to prevent future occurrences .

Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie expressed his own frustration, calling for change after what he described as disorder and damage to local businesses. He urged students involved to take responsibility for their actions .

Guelph is not alone in facing this challenge. University towns across Ontario have struggled at times to contain rowdy off-campus parties in the fall, when warm weather and the energy of a new semester collide. Other universities in the province said they are working to minimize the impacts of similar upcoming events .

The charges laid this weekend represent more than a legal process. They are a reminder that the line between celebration and harm can blur quickly, and that the streets where students live are also the streets where families and neighbours make their homes. What happened in Guelph will be reviewed, not only by police and the university, but by a community left to consider how a tradition meant to welcome people home became something that pushed them apart.
