What happens when Halloween violence arrives near a campus?

Halloween in a college town is a night of costumes and crowds, of streets filled with people moving between parties and bars, the ordinary rules of the semester suspended for a few hours. In East Lansing, that night became something else. Between Saturday night and early Sunday morning, police responded to two separate shootings and two car crashes involving pedestrians. Seven people were hospitalized in total, five of them with gunshot wounds. The first shooting occurred after midnight near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street, where three people were taken to a hospital. Two were in stable condition; the condition of the third was unknown on Sunday afternoon. The second shooting happened in the early morning hours near Stoddard Street and Frye Avenue, where two people were wounded and both were in stable condition

The East Lansing Police Department was stretched thin. Chief Jen Brown said each crime scene was still being worked when the next incident began. "On one of our busiest nights, East Lansing Police Department officers provided life-saving aid to gunshot victims, secured multiple crime scenes and removed impaired drivers from our streets," she said . The East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 incidents over 24 hours, 75 of them overnight. Other local police and fire departments assisted . Multiple guns were recovered from the scene of the second shooting, though it was not yet known whether they were the firearms used .

The shootings occurred near the Michigan State University campus, and MSU police confirmed the first shooting but provided few details . A neighbor's Ring doorbell camera captured the sound of gunfire—at least twenty shots, according to one report . The university's Office of the President said in a Facebook post that the weekend's incidents were "deeply concerning," noting the shootings and reports of "inappropriate behavior" at a fraternity . No MSU alert was issued, according to local reporting .

The crashes added another layer to the night's chaos. The first occurred Saturday night on Abbott Road near Library Lane, where a moving vehicle struck a pedestrian. The driver remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital in critical condition but was later stable after surgery. The second crash happened near Grand River Avenue and Gunson Street, where a driver was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and a firearm was recovered from the vehicle. The pedestrian was in stable condition .

East Lansing is a community defined by its relationship to the university, and Halloween is one of the nights when that relationship is most visible—thousands of students and visitors moving through streets that are normally quiet. The violence that unfolded was not a single event but a series of them, each one demanding a response from a department that was already stretched. The investigation into both shootings continues, and police have not announced arrests in connection with the gunfire. The injured will recover, or they will not. The streets will reopen. But the night of October 31, 2026, will remain in the memory of a town that had expected only costumes and celebration.
