Wharton Beach’s Hidden Echo: WWI Notes Wash Ashore After 109 Years

In the soft, remote sweep of Wharton Beach near Esperance in Western Australia, among the scattered fragments of drift and dune, a humble glass bottle lay hidden for decades. When the Deb Brown family discovered it during their routine beach-cleaning, they could not have imagined the window it opened into a world over a century old.

Inside the bottle were two handwritten letters, dated 15 August 1916, penned by Australian soldiers on their way to the Great War. The first was from Malcolm Alexander Neville, addressing his mother from the troop ship HMAT A70 Ballarat: “food is really good so far, with the exception of one meal which we buried at sea… the ship is ‘heaving and rolling, but we are as happy as Larry’.” The second, from William Kirk Harley, noted simply, “somewhere in the Bight,” and ended with a gesture to the finder: “may the finder be as well as we are at present.”

The physical condition of the bottle is remarkable: clear, thick glass with no barnacle growth, the letters inside still legible despite the passage of time and exposure to the elements. According to the Browns, the bottle likely remained buried in the dunes for many years before winter storm erosion revealed it.

The human story deepens the discovery. Neville, aged 28, was killed in action in France in April 1917. Harley survived the war but later died in Adelaide in 1934, his family believing his wartime gassing contributed to his illness. (ABC News) Their families, connected after the find, described the discovery as “absolutely stunned” and “unbelievable” — a voice from the past reaching across time.

This find is more than a curiosity. It reminds us of the ordinary hopes pored into extraordinary conflict, of the offshore voyage that marked a departure into an unknown future. In a single bottle, two men cast their words into the sea, perhaps hoping for connection, perhaps simply marking their place in a world on the brink.
