Warm Days, Wild Skies: The Storm Season Arrives

There is a particular rhythm to spring in Queensland—a slow warming, a drying of the soil, a sky that seems to hold its breath before the first storms arrive. This year, that breath has been held longer than usual. September passed with barely a drop of rain, just 1.4 millimeters across the entire state . The landscape grew dry, the creeks low, and the storm season seemed delayed. Now, forecasters say, the pattern is about to shift.

Maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius across much of south-east Queensland on Monday, with Brisbane reaching 31, Ipswich 34, and Toowoomba 30 . But the warmth will bring instability. A series of troughs moving across the state are expected to provide fuel for showers and thunderstorms, with the potential for large hail and damaging winds .

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Brandon Creagh said the storm activity could hit south of Brisbane from Tuesday, with the greatest risk of large hail near the New South Wales border around the Gold Coast and as far inland as the Granite Belt . "Given that it's so close and forecasts do move around a bit, I wouldn't say that it's impossible for Brisbane to see a severe thunderstorm this week," he said .

The potential for severe weather is slightly above average for October, a month that typically marks the peak of Queensland's storm season . Rainfall totals will vary widely: some areas could receive one to 20 millimeters, while severe thunderstorms could deliver 20 to 50 millimeters in isolated locations . Heavy falls are possible on the Gold Coast, while parts of far north Queensland may see little to no rain at all .

The storms are expected to persist through Wednesday and Thursday, with conditions not settling down significantly as the weekend approaches . The Bureau has advised residents to prepare for hazardous conditions, including the possibility of flash flooding and damaging wind gusts .

For a state that has been unusually dry, the rain is welcome—but it may arrive too fast and too hard for some areas to absorb. "For some it might be too much too fast, and for others, you probably won't get as much as you're looking for," said senior meteorologist Angus Hines . The storm season has arrived, not gradually, but all at once.
