Cork, Ireland— Two firefighters were injured and heavy property damage was caused after a commercial warehouse blaze broke out in Cork City on October 22, 2026.
The fire started at 6:20 a.m. in a wholesale distribution warehouse on the outskirts of the city near Little Island. Workers arriving for an early shift saw smoke pouring from roller shutters and called 112. Within minutes flames broke through the roof. The building, 2,000 square meters, held paper goods, plastics and cleaning chemicals.
Cork City and County Fire Brigades sent six engines and an aerial ladder platform. They found the warehouse fully involved, fire rolling across the roof, pallets collapsing inside. The heat was so intense crews had to pull back and fight defensively. Exploding aerosol cans sent debris into the air.
Two firefighters were injured during interior search for possible trapped staff. One suffered burns to hands and face when a flashover occurred near a doorway. The other fell through a weakened floor section and injured his leg. Both were taken to Cork University Hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening.
“The building went up very fast. Stock was high and tightly packed. We had to switch to external attack to stop spread to neighboring units,” said a Cork fire officer at the scene. The warehouse shares a wall with two other commercial units that were saved.
Residents in nearby estates were told to keep windows closed due to acrid smoke containing chemical irritants. The EPA was notified and monitored air quality. No evacuation was ordered beyond the industrial estate. The fire burned for four hours before being brought under control.
The owner said the warehouse was insured and held around one million euros worth of stock. All staff were accounted for. One delivery driver said, “We opened the shutter and smoke hit us in the face. We got out and ran. Everything inside is gone.”
Fire investigators and Gardaí have sealed the site. The cause is not yet known but is believed to be electrical, starting near a charging area for forklifts. The Health and Safety Authority has been informed due to the firefighter injuries.
The building is destroyed and will likely be demolished. The adjacent road remains closed. The investigation continues.
