Vocational School Violence in Ostrołęka Leaves Nine Injured as Teenager Assaults Classmates with Machete

Ostrołęka, Poland—A nineteen-year-old vocational student stormed his school armed with a heavy blade and homemade explosives, leaving nine people wounded before armed police cornered him along a nearby riverbank. The sudden outbreak of violence inside Vocational School Complex No. 4 shattered morning classes and forced dozens of terrified teenagers to barricade themselves inside locked classrooms.

The suspect launched the attack inside a first-floor hallway shortly after 11:00 a.m., targeting both students and staff members at random. Five minors, two teachers, and two school visitors sustained knife wounds, with two victims suffering severe injuries that required urgent trauma surgery at the regional hospital.

Panic spread through the corridors as teachers stacked desks against doorframes and instructed students to drop to the floor. Emergency call centers received dozens of frantic calls from inside the facility while staff attempted to apply tourniquets to bleeding victims in hallway alcoves.

Police units and paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes, establishing a perimeter around the educational compound. Bomb disposal specialists quickly secured a abandoned backpack left inside the building, confirming the presence of volatile homemade explosive devices that had failed to detonate.

"The situation was secured rapidly through coordinated action between local patrols and emergency responders," declared Mayor Paweł Niewiadomski during an emergency briefing outside the facility. "Law enforcement has isolated the suspect, and medical personnel are attending to every injured person."

Officers tracked the fleeing suspect to a marshy riverbank less than one kilometer from the campus. Pictures released by regional police showed the suspect pinned face down on the ground, bloodied hands bound behind his back, after sustaining self-inflicted injuries during his escape attempt.

School violence of this magnitude remains exceptionally rare across Poland, triggering an immediate lockdown of neighboring academic institutions across Masovia province. Forensic teams spent the afternoon dusting classroom doors for fingerprints and collecting bloodstained evidence from the main hallway.

Regional prosecutors opened a formal investigation into multiple charges of attempted murder and public endangerment using explosive materials. Investigators are reviewing social media accounts associated with the teenager to establish a motive for the assault.

The suspect remains under heavy police guard at a specialized psychiatric unit following emergency medical treatment for his wounds. Educational authorities suspended all classes at the school indefinitely as grief counselors set up support stations for surviving students and staff families.
