In the quiet hum of digital productivity, a new collaborator has entered the room — one that listens, creates, and suggests without pushing us into rigid workflows. Microsoft’s latest move feels like inviting a quiet assistant into our Word and Excel documents, ready to help shape our work with simple conversation.
Microsoft has launched an Agent Mode for Excel and Word, making complex tasks accessible through natural language prompts. In Excel, the mode enables users to ask for charts, analyses, and formula-based transformations; in Word, it can draft, refine, or edit documents interactively.
The feature is available to Microsoft 365 Copilot users and currently operates only in the web versions of Excel and Word. Microsoft has confirmed that support for PowerPoint is on the roadmap.
Additionally, the company introduced an Office Agent in Copilot Chat, which can construct documents and slides via chatbot prompts. This agent works alongside the Agent Mode to offer a more conversational setup for productivity.
At present, the new capabilities are included in Microsoft’s Frontier early-access programme, restricting availability to users who have been accepted into that tier. Desktop versions of Word and Excel are expected to gain Agent Mode support later.
