U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said President Donald Trump now supports a Russia sanctions bill that would impose economic penalties meant to cripple Russia’s ability to fund its war in Ukraine.
Graham told reporters that he met with Trump at the White House and the president “greenlit” the sanctions legislation, according to a report by the Associated Press. A White House official also confirmed to the AP that the president backs the measure.
The bill—authored chiefly by Graham and Sen. Richard Blumenthal—would allow the administration to impose tariffs and “secondary sanctions” on countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other exports. Graham said the timing would align with Ukraine’s concessions for peace and with the view that Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, continues to kill civilians.
The AP reported that the White House had previously indicated it wanted revisions and flexibility on the sanctions package, but did not specify what changes were secured when it confirmed Trump’s support.
Graham said the Senate could vote on the measure as early as the following week, though prospects for timing were described as uncertain given the chamber’s legislative schedule.
