Despite Araqchi's efforts to engage with regional mediators over the weekend, the absence of US representatives became evident after President Donald Trump instructed his envoys not to pursue negotiations.

On April 26, 2026, Trump confirmed that he canceled the visit by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to Islamabad due to the perceived inadequacy of Iran's offers for peace. "Iran offered a lot, but not enough," Trump remarked, emphasizing the necessity for concrete assurances regarding Iran's nuclear capabilities.

The ceasefire enacted following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February remains in effect, yet no progress has been made toward a comprehensive peace agreement, which is crucial given the war's toll, including rising oil prices and geopolitical instability.
