Sydney, Australia— One commuter was killed Saturday in an unprovoked stabbing attack at a suburban train station in western Sydney.
The attack happened at 7:35 a.m. on October 25, 2026 at Blacktown station on the T1 Western line. The platform was busy with morning commuters. Police said the victim, a 34-year-old man, was standing near the coffee kiosk waiting for a city-bound train. He was approached from behind and stabbed in the neck and chest without warning.
NSW Police said the assailant used a kitchen knife. Witnesses reported no argument, no robbery attempt. The victim collapsed on the platform. Two bystanders attempted first aid and called for station staff.
Transport officers tackled the suspect within 90 seconds. The man, aged 28, was disarmed and pinned to the ground near the ticket gates. He offered no resistance after being restrained. The knife was recovered on the platform.
"We are treating this as a random, unprovoked attack. There is no known link between the two men," a NSW Police superintendent said at the station. "The speed of response from transport staff prevented further harm."
ABC News Australia reported the suspect had a history of mental health contacts with police and was known to local officers from prior public disturbances. He was taken to Blacktown Hospital for assessment under police guard before formal interview.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedic efforts. His family was notified late morning. The station was locked down for five hours while forensic teams photographed blood trails and collected CCTV.
Trains bypassed Blacktown during the closure, causing delays across the Western line. Commuters were diverted to buses. Many described panic when announcements told them to clear the platform.
NSW Trains said counseling support was offered to staff and witnesses. The Premier issued a statement calling the attack senseless and promising a review of knife security at stations.
The suspect remained in custody Saturday evening. Charges of murder were expected.
