YISHUN, SINGAPORE — Panic broke out at a residential condominium in Yishun on a Wednesday night, July 29, 2026 after a sudden vehicle fire erupted in the basement carpark, sending thick, choking plumes of black smoke billowing through the complex.
The dramatic incident occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. at Orchid Park Condominium, located along Yishun Street 81. Residents reported hearing a loud sound resembling an explosion before noticing an intense smell of smoke.
Flames quickly engulfed a vehicle parked in the underground level, creating dense black smoke that poured out of carpark openings and drifted up toward the residential blocks. Alarmed residents from nearby units rushed to look out as the smoke accumulated around the lower levels of the building.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received immediate alerts and dispatched emergency resources to the scene. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus deployed two water jets to tackle the blaze in the confined underground space, successfully bringing the fire under control before it could spread to adjacent vehicles.
As a safety precaution, residents from the affected residential tower were evacuated while emergency crews cleared the smoke and secured the area. Nee Soon GRC Member of Parliament Lee Hui Ying later shared updates noting that residents maintained a calm demeanor during the ordeal and praised neighbors and local volunteers who stepped forward to support one another.
Paramedics treated individuals at the scene, and one person was subsequently conveyed to the Singapore General Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
Authorities confirmed that the vehicle involved was not an electric vehicle. Investigations by the SCDF and local police are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the basement fire.
Town council representatives and building management are working closely with safety inspectors to assess structural integrity and clear soot damage from the underground facilities. Residents have been reminded to keep escape routes unobstructed and report any unusual hazards promptly as the community returns to normalcy following the late-night scare.
