Under Heavy Fire: Widespread Russian Missile Barrage Kills 8 and Injures Dozens in Ukraine

KYIV — A devastating wave of Russian missile and drone strikes swept across Ukraine overnight and into the early morning hours, leaving at least eight people dead and dozens more severely injured as civilian infrastructure and residential areas were hit.

The heavy barrage struck major cities across eastern and central Ukraine, triggering urgent air defense responses in what officials called one of the most intense attacks in recent weeks.

In multiple Ukrainian cities, long-range cruise missiles and strike drones breached air defenses, crashing into apartment complexes, commercial districts, and crucial utility facilities.

Emergency crews rushed to the scenes of several strikes, where fires raged through multi-story residential buildings. Search and rescue teams labored through burning debris and collapsed structures to rescue trapped residents and transport victims suffering from shrapnel wounds and blast trauma to local hospitals.

"The impact shook the entire block," said one Kyiv resident whose apartment complex was damaged by falling missile debris. "We hid in the inner corridor, but windows were shattered everywhere."

The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that regional rescue services are actively operating at multiple strike sites across affected regions. Local authorities reported that among the dead and wounded were several emergency responders and civilians who were trapped inside damaged structures.

Air defense forces managed to intercept and destroy numerous incoming aerial targets, but the sheer volume of the salvo overwhelmed localized defenses in several urban centers.

Ukrainian government officials condemned the deadly wave of strikes, calling on international allies to urgently accelerate the delivery of advanced air defense systems and ammunition to protect vulnerable civilian centers.

As search operations continue at several disaster sites, officials warn that the death toll may rise as rescue teams clear heavy concrete debris from impacted residential areas.

Meanwhile, utility providers and municipal workers have scrambled to restore power, water, and heating services to thousands of affected households ahead of plummeting nighttime temperatures, working round-the-clock amidst lingering air raid warnings.
