UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the death of Mohammad el Shami, a Yemeni staff member of the UN human rights office, while in Houthi custody. El Shami had been detained since June 6, 2024, and the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The UN said authorities had provided no information about his well-being or proof of life despite repeated requests. Guterres called for an immediate, impartial, transparent and thorough investigation and urged the unconditional release of other detained UN and humanitarian personnel.
