Ukrainian drone attacks hit Russia’s Saratov Oil Refinery and a petrochemical plant in Tatarstan overnight on July 8, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed.
Zelensky said Ukraine is responding to Russian attacks on Ukraine and to Moscow’s actions that have “prolong[ed] the war,” adding that the strikes were part of Ukraine’s effort to retaliate and pressure Russian capabilities.
According to the report, Russia’s defense authorities issued warnings about the risk of drone strikes in advance of the events. The Saratov region, where the refinery is located, sits roughly hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
In Tatarstan, the targeted site was identified as a petrochemical facility. The story also notes that Ukraine has increasingly focused on striking infrastructure deeper inside Russia, aiming to reduce Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort—particularly through attacks on energy and logistical nodes.
The confirmed drone strikes occurred alongside a period of heightened Russian missile activity, including multiple ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv within a short span of days.
