UK Terror Threat Level Raised to 'Severe' After Golders Green Attack

On April 30, 2026, the UK Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre announced that the national threat level has been raised from "substantial" to "severe." This escalation comes in response to a stabbing attack in Golders Green, North London, where two Jewish men, including Shloime Rand, a 34-year-old victim, were attacked. Authorities are treating this incident as a terrorist act.

The suspected attacker, Essa Suleiman, a 45-year-old man from southeast London with Somali roots, was already flagged in 2020 under the government’s counter-terrorism Prevent program. His background raises significant concerns regarding Islamist and extreme right-wing terrorism, reflecting a broader trend of rising threats in the UK.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the Golders Green stabbings as "abhorrent" anti-Semitic violence and emphasized that the government is committed to protecting Jewish communities. In light of the increased threat level, the government has allocated an additional £25 million for security measures aimed at safeguarding synagogues, schools, and community centers. This funding brings the total investment to £58 million for the year, marking a historic level of support for community security.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor of counter-terrorism policing emphasized that police forces across the country will enhance their presence and engage in vigilant patrols, noting that operations will be unpredictable to ensure security. He also highlighted that the UK has been experiencing a gradual increase in the threat from terrorist ideologies and state-linked actors, particularly affecting Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions.

The new "severe" threat level, which indicates a high likelihood of an attack, was last implemented in November 2021 after significant events, including the bombing of the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. Following that, the threat level was lowered to "substantial" in February 2022. As the government responds to these urgent threats, it urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
