The UK plans to introduce default settings that block social media access for 16- and 17-year-olds between midnight and 6am. The proposal would also automatically disable features linked to addictive use, including endless video reels and algorithmic feeds, when users are on supported platforms. Ministers say the curfew is intended to protect teenagers’ wellbeing even as they gain more independence at 16. Critics argue teens could bypass the defaults, and say stronger safety-by-design rules are still needed.
