The United States and Iran exchanged intense new attacks after President Donald Trump declared that the interim ceasefire was effectively finished.

Hours earlier, Trump said Iran’s attacks on vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz signaled the end of the fragile pause in fighting. In response, the U.S. carried out another round of strikes on Wednesday night, according to U.S. officials, with the military saying the actions were intended to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the strait. Trump later warned that if attacks on shipping happen again, the situation would worsen, while also suggesting the U.S. military action could escalate quickly. Iran, for its part, said it would defend itself and accused the U.S. of violating the terms of the interim arrangement.
