Vredenburg, South Africa—A driver was rushed to a medical facility in critical condition on Wednesday after being cut free from a crumpled vehicle following a two-car collision on Saldanha Road.
The violent impact occurred near the entrance of the commercial precinct along the main arterial route connecting Vredenburg and Saldanha Bay. A hatchback attempting to negotiate an intersection collided with an oncoming sedan, folding the side profile of the smaller vehicle around the driver seat.
West Coast Medical Rescue, Metro EMS Rescue, and Saldanha Bay Fire and Traffic Services dispatched rapid response units to the scene within minutes of the alarm. First responders found the occupant pinned beneath the collapsed door frame and steering column.
Metro EMS Rescue technicians utilized specialized hydraulic jaws of life and spreaders to cut away the driver-side door pillars and force open the cabin space. Advanced life support paramedics stabilized the victim inside the vehicle before extricating them onto a transport stretcher.
The patient was transported under continuous resuscitation protocols to a nearby hospital for emergency surgical intervention. The driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries and received field care from paramedics before providing a preliminary statement to police officers.
Municipal traffic officers diverted northbound vehicles onto secondary bypass routes, creating localized delays along the industrial transport route. Fluid spills from cracked engine blocks were coated with neutralizers by firefighters to prevent secondary road hazards.
SAPS officers mapped out the crash site, recording impact marks and vehicle rest positions to determine whether excess speed or a failure to yield right-of-way caused the crash. Commercial flatbed trucks arrived shortly after to tow both destroyed vehicles to a police impound lot for mechanical auditing.
Traffic flow along Saldanha Road was restored to normal operations late Wednesday afternoon following the removal of all crash debris.
