Two Teenagers Killed In Head-On Motorcycle Crash On Bahia Rural Road, Police Investigate Speed

Salvador, Brazil— Two teenage boys were killed Saturday night when their motorcycles collided head-on at high speed on a narrow dirt road outside the town of Irecê, Bahia, throwing both riders into a ditch and leaving the bikes tangled in a fire that locals could not put out. The crash happened around 8:30 p.m.

The victims, ages 16 and 17, were riding without helmets, without licenses, on bikes with no plates. They were friends. One was heading to a soccer game. The other was returning from work at a farm. The road, BA-148 access road to Lapão, is unpaved, dusty, with no lighting. They met on a blind curve near a eucalyptus grove. Neither braked. Witnesses heard the impact from 300 meters away.

“They ride like that every night. Fast, no lights, just phone flashlights,” said a farmer who lives 50 meters from the curve. He was the first to arrive. “Both were on the ground. One still breathing. We called SAMU. It took an hour to come from Irecê.” The second boy died at the scene. The first died in the ambulance.

Motorcycle deaths dominate Bahia’s interior. Teens ride early for work. No training. No inspection. The local police detachment has two officers and no breathalyzer. A traffic officer who covers the region said he had warned the municipality about that curve. “We asked for speed bumps and signs. No funds. No will,” he said. He said the motorcycles had modified exhausts and bald tires.

Parents in the community said the boys had bought the bikes second-hand two months ago, pooling money from farm labor. One mother said she told her son not to ride at night. “He said everyone does. What could I say? There is no bus. There is no other way to move,” she said. She sat outside the health post where her son’s body lay.

The Bahia Military Police said alcohol may have been a factor. A bottle of cachaça was found near one bike. Tests are pending. No helmets were found at the scene.

By 10 p.m., the bikes were still burning when firefighters arrived. They used soil to smother flames. The road was closed briefly, then reopened. Kids gathered to watch.

The bodies were taken to the IML in Irecê. The families were told to collect death certificates Monday.

The curve remains unmarked. The bikes are gone.
