Two Skydivers Killed in Midair Collision Over Riverside County

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CALIF. — A routine afternoon jump turned catastrophic on Friday when two skydivers died following a violent midair collision high above Riverside County. The accident occurred around 12:00 PM near a local drop zone, where both divers were participating in a scheduled group jump. According to preliminary reports, the two individuals collided shortly after deploying their parachutes, causing their gear to become severely entangled in midair.

Eyewitnesses on the ground reported watching the skydivers descend rapidly after the impact as bystanders frantically dialed 911. Emergency responders, including county fire crews and paramedics, rushed to the landing area, but both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severe impact. "Everything looked normal until right after the canopy deployment," said one witness who was at the airfield at the time of the incident. "They drifted into the same airspace, collided, and their chutes immediately tangled up."

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two victims, pending the notification of next of kin. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will lead the investigation to determine the exact sequence of events. Investigators are expected to examine the parachutes, altimeters, and automatic activation devices, as well as video footage from helmet-mounted cameras worn by participants on the jump.

Local officials expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and the tight-knit skydiving community as the investigation into the tragedy begins. Safety experts noted that while midair collisions during canopy deployment are exceedingly rare, they represent one of the most hazardous risks in group skydiving discipline. Airborne traffic management near designated landing zones requires precise spatial awareness, and federal investigators will be examining weather conditions, wind speeds, and jump spacing to understand what factors contributed to the loss of separation between the two jumpers.

Drop zone operations were temporarily suspended following the tragedy to allow federal officials full access to the landing field and gear assembly areas. Grief counselors were made available at the airfield to assist fellow jumpers, instructors, and witnesses who were present during the horrific accident.
