Two riders stopped by chance; what they saw changed everything.

There are places in the countryside where the quiet is so complete it feels like a held breath—remote tracks, crown land, stretches of earth where the only visitors are those who know the land well. On Monday morning, two trail bike riders made their way along an overgrown track in Terragon, a hamlet of fewer than one hundred people near the Queensland border. They stopped at a disused stock dip, a concrete trough where farmers once bathed livestock to rid them of parasites. What they saw inside changed the quiet into something else entirely.

The body of a woman was found partially submerged in about half a metre of water. Police were called to the property on Kyogle Road just after 11:20 a.m., and by Tuesday, Detective Inspector Matthew Zimmer stood before reporters in Tweed Heads to describe a death being treated as suspicious. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition, he said, making identification impossible for now.

What makes the case particularly unsettling is not only the state of the remains but the location itself. The stock dip sits about 300 metres off the road, down a track that shows no sign of regular use. There was no vehicle nearby, no apparent mode of transport that could explain how the woman arrived at such a place. “Due to the location of the body, the remoteness of the area, the absence of a vehicle or any other mode of transport, we are treating this death as suspicious,” Zimmer said.

The discovery was made on crown land, and police have established a crime scene, with specialist forensic examiners combing the area overnight. A post-mortem examination is expected this week to determine identity and cause of death. Detectives are checking missing persons registers in both New South Wales and Queensland, though no link has yet been established.

Neighbours have been spoken to, statements taken. But for now, the woman remains unnamed. She is known only by the circumstances of her discovery—a body in a trough, in a place so remote it was found only by chance.

The investigation continues. Police have asked anyone with information to contact Tweed Heads Police or Crime Stoppers.
