Cork, Ireland— A rural road in north Cork was turned into a crash scene at 6:30 p.m. Friday when two cars collided head-on, killing two people and sending three others to hospital. Gardai said the impact was so severe both vehicles left the road and ended in a ditch. The road was closed overnight for forensic examination.
The collision happened on the N72 near Mallow, a single-carriageway stretch known locally for fast traffic. One car, a silver hatchback with two occupants, was traveling east. The other, a black SUV carrying three people, was heading west. Witnesses said one vehicle appeared to drift across the white line on a bend before the crash.
Fire crews from Mallow and Kanturk cut open both wrecks to reach the occupants. Two people in the hatchback, a man in his 30s and a woman in her late 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released. Three people from the SUV, including a teenage boy, were taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.
"We are looking at speed, road surface and possible distraction as factors," a Gardai traffic corps sergeant at the scene said. He said dashcam footage from a lorry traveling behind the SUV shows it braking hard before impact. No other vehicles were involved. Weather was dry, visibility good.
Locals gathered at the edge of the cordon late into the night. One farmer said that bend has seen multiple close calls. "People overtake there even though you cannot see, it was only a matter of time," he said. Cork County Council said the road had its surface dressing renewed last year and met safety standards. No works were underway.
Gardai closed the N72 between Mallow and Rathmore and diverted traffic through Bweeng. Forensic collision investigators used laser scanners and drone photography to map the scene. Debris was spread over 80 meters. Airbags in both cars had deployed. Both vehicles will be taken to a Garda pound for mechanical inspection.
Cork University Hospital said late Friday that two of the injured were in critical but stable condition, the third in stable condition. Family liaison officers have been assigned. The coroner has been notified and will arrange post-mortems. The Taoiseach's office issued a brief statement offering condolences.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses who were on the N72 between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. and for any dashcam or CCTV. The investigation remains active, with a file to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions once complete.
