Two names, two burning vehicles, and questions that remain

There is a particular horror in the phrase "burning vehicle"—a phrase that reduces a human life to an object, a crime scene, a problem for investigators. But behind that phrase are two men who lived, who had names, who were known to someone. Toronto police have now identified both of them. Marcus Charles, 32, of Scarborough. Mohamud Kheyre, 30. Both were found inside vehicles that had been set on fire, in two separate incidents that unfolded within hours of each other on opposite ends of the city .

The first call came just before 11:30 p.m. on September 21, near Steeles Avenue East and Reesor Road in Scarborough. Emergency crews found a vehicle on fire in a field. Inside was a body . The second call came shortly before 1 a.m. on September 22, in the area of Royal York Road and Edenbridge Drive in Etobicoke. Another burning vehicle, this one in a parking lot. Another body inside .

Detective-Sergeant Henri Marsman of Toronto's Homicide and Missing Persons Unit said autopsies confirmed that both men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds before the fires were set . They were killed first. The fires were not the cause of death; they were something else—an attempt to erase, to destroy evidence, to make identification more difficult. Kheyre's body was so badly burned that identification was delayed .

The first victim, Charles, was identified through fingerprints. He was found inside a rental vehicle, and Marsman said investigators believe he was killed within a 24-hour period before the fire . The second victim, Kheyre, was found inside a vehicle that had been stolen from somewhere in the Greater Toronto Area . Police believe both men were targeted, and both deaths are being investigated as homicides .

It remains unclear whether the two incidents are connected. Marsman said it is too early to determine that, but the timing and the method—two bodies, two burning vehicles, within hours—suggest something more than coincidence . No suspect information has been released in either case. Police have said there is no ongoing threat to the public .

These are Toronto's 27th and 28th homicides of 2026 . Two men in their early thirties, killed and then burned, their names now spoken by police and reported by media, their stories ending in ways that invite more questions than answers. The investigation continues, and anyone with information is asked to contact Toronto police's homicide squad or Crime Stoppers anonymously .

Toronto police have identified Mohamud Kheyre, 30, as the second victim found inside a burning vehicle in Etobicoke on September 22. Marcus Charles, 32, was found in a similar incident in Scarborough the night before. Both were shot before their vehicles were set on fire. The homicides are Toronto's 27th and 28th of 2026.
