Two Fighting for Life, Over a Dozen Injured in Horrific Selwyn District Crash

SELWYN DISTRICT — Emergency services are at the scene of a devastating multi-vehicle crash in Canterbury’s Selwyn District that has left more than a dozen people injured, including two who are currently fighting for their lives in critical condition.

The serious collision occurred late on Saturday afternoon, July 4, 2026 on a high-speed stretch of the rural highway network. Police, along with multiple Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews and a massive deployment of Hato Hone St John ambulance personnel, rushed to the scene following urgent 111 calls from passing motorists.

First responders arrived to find a scene of immense destruction, with at least three vehicles severely damaged and debris scattered across both lanes. Paramedics immediately began treating the casualties, while firefighters utilized specialized hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate several trapped occupants from the mangled wreckage.

"This is an incredibly severe incident involving a large number of patients," a police spokesperson confirmed. "Two individuals have sustained life-threatening injuries and are in critical condition, while more than a dozen others are being treated for injuries ranging from minor to serious."

Due to the scale of the crash and the severity of the injuries, multiple rescue helicopters were dispatched to the rural location. The two critically injured patients were stabilized at the roadside by intensive care paramedics before being airlifted directly to Christchurch Hospital for emergency surgery.

A fleet of road ambulances transported the remaining injured passengers to nearby medical facilities. The surrounding local medical networks have been placed on high alert to accommodate the sudden influx of patients.

The highway has been completely locked down in both directions and is expected to remain closed for a significant period. The Police Serious Crash Unit has arrived on site to begin a detailed forensic scene examination to establish the exact chain of events that led to the pileup.

Motorists traveling through the Selwyn District are facing extensive gridlock and are being strongly advised to avoid the area entirely. Long diversions are currently being established, but transport authorities warn that significant delays will persist late into the night.

The identity of those involved has not yet been released as police work to notify next of kin. An update on the road status and the condition of the injured is expected by morning.
