Santa Cruz, Bolivia— A rural wildfire trapped and killed two farmers attempting to protect crops in Bolivia on October 16, 2026, and the fire burned through dry grassland before emergency crews could reach the fields. The men stayed too long. The wind shifted.
The Forest and Land Authority, ABT, said the fire started mid-afternoon in a farming area east of Santa Cruz, near San José de Chiquitos. Farmers had been burning stubble to clear land when flames escaped due to strong gusts. Two men, aged 54 and 38, father and son, tried to create a firebreak with shovels.
Witnesses said the blaze moved faster than expected. It jumped a dirt road and surrounded them. "They tried to save the corn. The fire came from behind. They could not run," a neighbor told El Deber, standing near charred stalks. Their bodies were found hours later.
El Deber reported that wildfires in the Chiquitania region have intensified this dry season, with thousands of hectares burned. Farmers use fire to prepare fields, but controls are weak. The ABT had issued a burning ban that day, but enforcement is minimal in remote areas.
A firefighter from the municipality said, "We arrived with a water truck, but the fire was already large. We found the farmers near a trench they dug. They had no protective equipment." He said two other people suffered smoke inhalation.
The victims were smallholders growing corn and beans for local markets. Their loss leaves a family without income and a community without two of its workers. Local leaders said they had requested firefighting tools for weeks.
The ABT and the Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation for unauthorized burning and negligent homicide. They will examine whether the initial burn was legal and whether warnings were ignored. The fire was contained by nightfall after burning approximately 200 hectares.
By evening, smoke still hung over the fields. Families gathered at the farm edge. The ground was black.
