Maslarevo, Bulgaria— Two drivers died Wednesday after a violent collision involving a bus on the highway near Maslarevo in northern Bulgaria. The road was closed for hours.
The Ministry of Interior said the crash happened on the main route connecting Ruse to the border area. A passenger bus and a light truck collided head-on near the village turnoff. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The bus was carrying a small number of passengers. None were reported dead, but several were treated for shock and minor injuries. Rescue crews said they had to force open the truck cabin to reach the second driver.
Traffic police diverted vehicles through secondary roads around Maslarevo. The closure stretched for nearly four kilometers. Queues built toward Ruse as trucks waited for clearance.
Early findings point to the truck crossing into the opposite lane. Investigators found no signs of braking on that side. They are checking whether fatigue or a mechanical fault played a role. The bus driver had logged a clean record, according to the company.
Forensic teams photographed the impact zone and collected debris spread over 50 meters. The bus front was crushed inward. The truck was pushed off the carriageway into a ditch. Diesel spilled and had to be contained.
The Ministry said toxicology samples were taken and the tachographs from both vehicles seized. Road conditions were dry at the time. The stretch near Maslarevo is straight but narrow, with no median separation.
Local residents said crashes are not rare there. Heavy trucks use the road daily to reach the Danube ports. Last year a similar collision killed one near the same kilometer marker.
The road reopened after 5 p.m. after wreckage was removed. Police said a report will go to the district prosecutor in Ruse.
