Two Dead Rural Uruguay: Bus Collides With Stray Livestock On Unlit Highway Sector Overnight

Montevideo, Uruguay—An interdepartmental passenger bus struck stray cattle along an unlit stretch of a rural highway early Monday morning, killing the bus driver and a front-row passenger. Rescue units reached the rural sector at 03:30 AM local time following urgent emergency radio dispatches. Twelve other passengers sustained varying degrees of non-life-threatening injuries.

National Highway Police officers immediately restricted access along the pitch-black rural corridor. The heavy impact crushed the front driver compartment of the long-distance vehicle, veering the bus off the paved shoulder into a deep drainage ditch.

Emergency workers worked for over two hours using hydraulic shears to free the trapped driver and forward passengers. First responders transported six injured occupants to regional hospital facilities in nearby towns for trauma treatment.

"The bus jerked violently to the right without any warning or deceleration," passenger Martin Benitez said from an emergency shelter point. "We hit the livestock head-on in total darkness before sliding off the embankment."

Rural police officers launched an immediate search along nearby farm fencing to locate breached boundaries where livestock wandered onto the public right-of-way. Authorities confirmed two cattle died instantly from the collision force on the asphalt lane.

Ministry of Transport inspectors inspected the vehicle structure and confirmed the bus operated with valid mechanical compliance certificates. Prosecutors ordered an immediate review of agricultural brand markings on the dead livestock to identify the property owner responsible for the stray animals.

Heavy duty recovery vehicles arrived at daybreak to extract the damaged interdepartmental bus from the roadside ditch. Traffic officers alternated northbound and southbound flow using single-lane control setups during recovery operations.

Local authorities remain at the scene overseeing the clearance of agricultural hazards along the highway shoulder, while judicial officials complete formal witness interviews.
