Two Dead After Midnight: Bus Loses Control on Wet Highway, Dozens Rushed to Hospitals

Konya, Turkey— Two people died instantly and fifteen others were injured when a passenger bus skidded on a rain-slick highway and rolled onto its side late on October 21, 2025.

The intercity coach was heading southbound with 17 people on board when it hit a stretch of pooled water. Police said the rear tires broke loose. The driver fought to hold the lane. The bus tipped, slid 40 meters, and came to rest blocking both lanes.

Rain had fallen hard for two hours. Visibility was low. The asphalt was black and slick. Other drivers who stopped said the bus was not speeding but looked unstable before it went over. One motorist dragged two passengers from the wreck before fuel started to leak.

Gendarmerie teams and highway paramedics arrived within 15 minutes. They found the bus on its right side, windows shattered, luggage scattered across the ditch. Two passengers in the middle rows were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured were laid on the shoulder, bleeding, soaked, shivering.

“We heard screaming, then silence, then screaming again,” said Murat Kaya, a truck driver who called emergency services. “The rain made it hard to see anything. We just pulled people out where we could reach.”

The injured were split between three hospitals in Konya province. Four were listed in critical condition with head and chest trauma. Doctors said the rest had fractures and lacerations. The driver survived with a broken collarbone and is under guard while investigators take his statement.

Officials from the provincial transport directorate said the bus had passed its last inspection in September and its tachograph was recovered. Initial focus is on road drainage and tire condition. “The highway is known to collect water at that curve. We have warned about it before,” a highway maintenance official said on condition of anonymity.

The highway stayed closed for almost five hours. Cranes lifted the wreckage near dawn. Traffic was diverted through rural roads, creating a 7-kilometer backup. Families gathered outside the hospitals through the night, waiting for names.

The prosecutor’s office has opened a formal inquiry. The bus company has not released a statement. The wreck is impounded for mechanical testing.
