The twilight zone — technically spanning roughly 300 to 1,000 feet below sea level — sits beyond the reach of standard scuba diving and lies above the deep ocean proper. Its extremes of pressure, cold and light make it an exceptionally difficult place to explore. This year’s expedition, led by marine scientists from the California Academy of Sciences, required specialized technical gear — a breathing mix of helium and air and slow‑ascent decompression practices — to allow divers to reach these depths safely for short windows of time.

Over eight dives in November, the team collected long‑term monitoring devices that had sat on deep reefs for more than eight years, capturing more than just coral and water readings. When these devices were brought to the surface, researchers rushed the encrusted materials to the University of Guam Marine Laboratory for careful processing. There, scientists photographed and catalogued more than 2,000 specimens, including about 100 recorded for the first time in this region and at least 20 that are potentially entirely new to science. These discoveries ranged from unfamiliar sea slugs and shimmering worms to delicate corals, hairy crabs and a possible new species of cardinalfish. One particularly intriguing find was a hermit crab species that uses clam‑like shells instead of the typical snail‑shell homes, a quirky adaptation that challenges previous assumptions about hermit crab behavior.

The expedition underscores how the twilight zone — often invisibly sandwiched between better‑studied shallow reefs and the pitch black of the deep sea — is a biological treasure trove, teeming with life forms adapted to its peculiar conditions. Although scientific dives into this realm are rare and time‑limited due to the extreme physiological risks and technical challenges, each descent reveals ecosystems unexpectedly rich and distinct from familiar coastal waters.

But the discoveries come with a somber undertone. Researchers also found plastic debris and human‑produced trash at depths where no sunlight reaches, indicating that humanity’s footprint extends even into these remote underwater landscapes. In addition, preliminary temperature data from the long‑sit monitors suggests that climate change is affecting deeper waters, challenging prior assumptions that the twilight zone might be somewhat shielded from warming trends that have most visibly impacted surface ecosystems.

These findings mark just the beginning of a two‑year project to recover a total of 76 monitors from remote reef systems across the Pacific — including locations in Palau, the Marshall Islands and French Polynesia — to build a more detailed and global picture of life in this mysterious marine zone. Researchers hope that the expanded data set will not only illuminate the twilight zone’s extraordinary biodiversity but also help inform conservation efforts at depths that have long been out of reach for detailed study.

In the broader sweep of science, these glimpses into the twilight zone serve as a humbling reminder: for all our advances, we have seen only a fraction of what Earth’s living system holds. With every new species recorded and every strange adaptation observed, the ocean makes clear that the unknown is vast, and that even in the dimmest reaches of our planet, life persists in astonishing and unforeseen forms.
