Twelve Women Spoke, and the Court Answered with Thirty Years

In a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday, twelve women stood one by one and spoke of what had been taken from them. Not possessions, not status—those were the brothers' currency, not their victims'. What was taken was something harder to name: the ability to trust, the sense of safety, the person each might have become if the assaults had never happened. When the sentences came, they arrived as a number, but the room had already filled with something the number could not measure.

Tal Alexander, 40, and twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, were each sentenced to 30 years in prison for sex trafficking . They had been convicted in March of using their wealth and social status—earned through luxury real estate careers that made them brokers to celebrities—to lure women to parties and properties where they drugged and raped them . U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni called their conduct "monstrous," saying their crimes "wreaked havoc on their lives" .

The five-week trial heard from eleven women, several of whom said they were minors at the time of the assaults. Prosecutors described a pattern that began in high school and continued for years: gifts, flights to Aspen and the Bahamas, drugs slipped into drinks, and assaults that ignored screams and explicit requests to stop . At least seventy women were assaulted by one or more of the brothers over two decades, prosecutors said in a court filing, describing them as "serial rapists" .

On Tuesday, the women spoke again. One, using a pseudonym, said she carried "a quiet funeral" within her for the person she might have become. Another described a Hamptons property as "a mansion of horror, a mansion of dark secrets" . Maya Miller told the court that after Tal Alexander raped her in 2014, she lost all sense of safety . A woman identified as Isa Brooks said she was sixteen when she was assaulted by Tal and Alon, and that she lost the ability to trust herself .

The brothers showed little emotion as the women spoke. When given the chance to address the court, each professed innocence. Tal Alexander said he saw how his behavior "hurt people's feelings" but denied drugging or raping anyone. Oren Alexander acknowledged regretting things he had said about women but insisted they never broke the law. Alon Alexander described himself as a devoted husband and father . Judge Caproni was unmoved. "How can someone who never acknowledged the wrongs they did be rehabilitated?" she asked .

The brothers had sought fifteen-year sentences, arguing they had become family men whose absence would harm their children. Prosecutors had sought life. The thirty-year terms, to run concurrently with additional twenty-year sentences for related crimes, represent a middle ground that the women in the gallery did not celebrate. Many had asked for the maximum .

The case sent tremors through the real estate industry, where Oren and Tal Alexander had been star brokers before founding their own firm. Alon worked for the family's private security company . Their access to money, private jets, and waterfront mansions was, prosecutors argued, not incidental to the crimes but the mechanism of them—the means by which trust was manufactured and then betrayed.

The brothers will serve their sentences in federal prison. Whether they serve them together is a decision the Bureau of Prisons will make. The women who spoke on Tuesday will carry what the court could not sentence: the aftermath, the quiet funeral, the long work of becoming someone new.
