Twelve Injured After Train Derailment Near Munich, Germany, Emergency Crews Evacuate Passengers From Tracks

Munich, Germany— A passenger train derailed near Munich on November 1, 2026, injuring 12 people and halting rail traffic on a busy line south of the Bavarian capital.

The derailment happened around 7:15 a.m. on the Munich-Rosenheim route. The regional train, carrying about 120 passengers, left the tracks on a curve. Two carriages tilted into a gravel embankment. Windows shattered. Luggage fell onto passengers.

Emergency services arrived quickly. Firefighters helped passengers climb out through emergency windows. Twelve were taken to hospitals in Munich and Rosenheim with fractures, cuts and concussions. Three are in serious but stable condition.

"The train braked hard, then shook violently. People fell. Then we stopped at an angle. It was frightening," a passenger said from a hospital waiting area. He said staff kept calm and guided evacuation along the tracks.

Deutsche Bahn halted all services on the line. Replacement buses were deployed. Long-distance trains between Munich and Salzburg were delayed by up to two hours. Commuters faced major disruption on a Saturday morning.

Investigators from the Federal Railway Accident Investigation Unit arrived by midday. They secured the train's black box and track data. Early focus is on a possible track defect and whether recent maintenance work left ballast unstable.

The Munich-Rosenheim line is heavily used by commuters and freight. It has seen repeated engineering works this year to replace aging switches. A union official said workers had flagged loose fastenings in the area last month. That claim is under review.

Prosecutors opened a preliminary inquiry into negligent bodily harm, standard procedure after rail incidents. No criminal suspicion has been announced. The train operator, Bayerische Regiobahn, said the driver followed speed limits and is cooperating.

Track repair crews said at least 200 meters of rail and sleepers must be replaced. Cranes are needed to lift the derailed carriages. The line is expected to remain closed until Sunday evening.

Passengers were offered assistance and compensation information at Munich Hauptbahnhof. Deutsche Bahn apologized for the disruption and said a full report will be released within weeks.
