Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Europe is “beginning to understand” what he described as Israel’s wider threat to international security, warning that Netanyahu’s approach is not only a regional problem but one that could undermine global stability.
Speaking in an interview, Fidan framed the conflict around Gaza and broader tensions in the region, saying Netanyahu’s policies are a “burden for the region” and a “burden and threat for international security.” He argued that Israel’s government needs an external enemy as elections approach and cautioned that Europe has yet to translate its growing concern into practical steps to address it.
Fidan also argued that the US-Iran ceasefire could still hold, saying recent flare-ups were linked to miscommunication and provocation rather than deliberate escalation. However, he said the situation still requires vigilance because retaliations and misunderstandings can quickly push events out of control.
On Gaza, Fidan said the Trump-backed “Board of Peace” helped halt parts of what he described as the genocide but has not fully delivered on promised humanitarian aid, shelter, and medicine. He said attention had shifted due to fighting elsewhere and called for renewed international pressure so Palestinians receive more international humanitarian assistance.
Finally, Fidan described Turkey’s role in mediating disputes as rooted in its ability to understand regional dynamics and connect with key players, adding that Turkey believes a stable regional security arrangement is necessary to ensure safety, political sovereignty, and territorial integrity for all parties.
