Turkey and the United Kingdom are expected to sign a new security and defence partnership deal, described as sensitive and built to expand cooperation between the two countries.
Reporting says the agreement is meant to formalize closer coordination on defence issues, including cooperation on their respective defence industries as well as areas such as counterterrorism, hybrid threats, and cybersecurity. Sources also characterize it as “comprehensive,” though the exact scope—particularly any mutual defence clause—has not been publicly detailed.
The deal is being compared to the 2021 France-Greece defence agreement, which included a mutual defence clause. However, sources say it is unclear whether the Turkey-UK document contains a similar provision, with the parties not expected to release the text given the sensitivity of its content.
The pact is expected to be signed in connection with meetings around Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s planned talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
