Turkey and Armenia to Restart Direct Trade

Turkey and Armenia will officially resume trade relations after a 33-year freeze, according to a Turkish foreign ministry spokesman. This significant decision comes as part of efforts to improve ties between the two nations, following the longstanding border closure enacted in 1993 during the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Turkey and Armenia to Restart Direct Trade

Turkey announced that it would restart direct trade with Armenia, marking a crucial step towards normalization of relations after more than three decades of estrangement. The Turkish foreign ministry emphasized that this development is part of a broader effort to foster better diplomatic relations since renewed discussions began in late 2021.

The border was closed in 1993 in support of Azerbaijan amidst its conflict with Armenia over the contested territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. In recent years, however, both nations have shown a willingness to mend fences, mostly driven by a desire to improve economic conditions and enhance regional stability.

The decision is expected to facilitate the flow of goods and services between the two countries, potentially leading to increased economic cooperation. This comes at a time when Armenia is looking to diversify its trading partners and strengthen its economy.

While details about specific trade agreements have yet to be released, both countries have pledged to work toward creating a more conducive environment for trade and investment. Observers see this as a hopeful sign for further diplomatic progress in a region fraught with historical tensions.
