Trump: Airspace Above Venezuela ‘Closed in Its Entirety’ as Tensions Grow Over Drug Strikes

On November 29, 2025, President Donald Trump declared via social media that all airlines and pilots should regard the Venezuelan airspace as entirely closed. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between the Trump administration and the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Trump’s statement pointedly included a warning to “Drug Dealers and Human Traffickers,” reflecting the U.S. government's ongoing crackdown on supposed drug cartels in Venezuela.

This declaration follows a recent alert from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which highlighted a "potentially hazardous situation" for aircraft over Venezuela due to escalating military activity. Consequently, several international airlines have suspended flights to Caracas, the Venezuelan capital.

In response to Trump's announcement, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry criticized it as a "hostile, unilateral, and arbitrary act" that undermines international law. They urged the UN and global community to denounce what they called an aggressive threat to Venezuela's sovereignty and security.

The announcement has also influenced deportation flights from the U.S. to Venezuela, with officials stating that the airspace closure halts these operations, which had been regularly scheduled.

This escalation in rhetoric and military action comes shortly after Trump had indicated that land operations against drug traffickers would begin soon, emphasizing a proactive approach to curbing drug smuggling from Venezuela into the U.S. Notably, since September, there have been at least 20 U.S. military strikes on boats suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean, resulting in significant casualties, although the administration has provided little evidence regarding these claims.

Trump's actions signify a hardening stance against Venezuela, which the U.S. has labeled as a terrorist network involved in drug trafficking. The president's announcement has thus intensified an already fraught relationship between the U.S. and Venezuela, raising concerns about future engagements and military interventions.
