Trudy Weakens, but the Coast Waits for the Sky to Clear

There is a particular rhythm to a hurricane's departure—the way the wind loosens its grip, the rain softens from a roar to a steady hush, the sky begins to remember what blue looks like. Off Mexico's Pacific coast, that rhythm is now unfolding, as Hurricane Trudy, which spent days churning the ocean into a threat, begins its slow retreat.

Trudy made its presence felt along Mexico's southwestern and west-central coast this weekend, lashing communities with heavy rain and strong winds as it moved northwest . The storm had strengthened to Category 3 earlier in the week, with maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour, before weakening as it approached the coast . By Sunday, it had diminished to Category 2, with winds of about 105 miles per hour, and forecasters expected further weakening as the storm's center remained near the coast before moving south of the Baja California Peninsula .

The warnings were serious and specific. A hurricane warning remained in effect from Manzanillo in Colima state to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco . The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned of "potentially life-threatening flooding and mudslides," particularly in areas with steep terrain . Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches were expected through the weekend, with isolated amounts of up to 12 inches along the coast in Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco . Waves of 4 to 5 meters were possible along parts of the Guerrero and Michoacan coasts .

What made Trudy particularly concerning was not its peak intensity but its context. Colima authorities noted that the ground was already saturated by successive storms along the Pacific coast, meaning that even moderate rainfall could cause damage . The Mexican navy urged mariners and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution, and authorities in vulnerable areas monitored the storm's trajectory . For communities still recovering from previous weather events, the margin for error was thin.

Trudy is the tenth hurricane to form in the Eastern Pacific this year, a milestone not reached since 2018, according to The Weather Network . The active season reflects the broader patterns of a warming ocean, though no single storm can be attributed to any single cause. What matters for the people in Trudy's path is not the climatology but the immediate: whether the rivers rise, whether the hillsides hold, whether the warnings were heard in time.

By Sunday evening, the storm was expected to remain near the coast before moving south of the Baja Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday . The warnings would eventually be lifted, the rain would stop, and the work of assessing the damage would begin. For now, the coast waits, as it has learned to do, for the sky to clear and the sea to settle.
