Tropical Depression Nine forms, and the Gulf Coast watches the water.

There is a particular stillness that settles over the Gulf of Mexico in early autumn, a pause before the waters remember their power. This week, that stillness was broken. A cluster of thunderstorms in the southwestern Gulf has organized into Tropical Depression Nine, and forecasters say it may not stay a depression for long.

The system, located about 380 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. It is moving east at 5 mph . The National Hurricane Center expects the depression to strengthen into a tropical storm by early Wednesday and potentially a hurricane by Thursday. If it reaches hurricane strength, it would be the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, and it would be named Isaias .

The forecast track takes the system slowly eastward over the next couple of days before a significant shift in the weather pattern turns it sharply northeast toward the northern Gulf Coast. Landfall is currently expected sometime Friday into early Saturday, with areas from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle most at risk . The National Hurricane Center warns that the storm could reach Category 2 strength with winds near 100 mph before making landfall .

Gulf waters are unusually warm for this time of year, providing fuel for strengthening. However, wind shear and dry air could still limit the system's organization. Forecasters note significant uncertainty remains about the exact track and intensity, with a shift of just 100 miles potentially making a major difference in which communities experience the greatest impacts . Hurricane and storm surge watches could be issued as soon as Wednesday .

Beyond wind, heavy rainfall is a concern. A widespread 4 to 6 inches of rain could fall along the storm's path, with isolated totals exceeding 10 inches, raising the risk of flash flooding and urban flooding from Friday into the weekend . The western Yucatan Peninsula may see impacts first as the system strengthens and moves eastward .

Residents along the northern Gulf Coast are urged to review their hurricane plans, know their evacuation zones, and monitor forecast updates closely. As the National Hurricane Center notes, it does not take a hurricane-strength system to cause significant impacts, particularly in a warming world that is making tropical systems wetter .
