SLOVAKIA- A quiet morning turned into a scene of horror at an elementary school in the northwestern village of Staškov, Slovakia, when a 13-year-old student launched a violent knife attack shortly after the first class concluded. The incident left a veteran teacher dead, another educator wounded, and a young pupil in critical condition, shocking the local community and triggering a nationwide reflection on school safety.
According to authorities, the suspect—an eighth-grade student at the school—drew a sharp object and began attacking individuals inside the building. Emergency operations dispatched ground ambulances alongside two medical rescue helicopters to the scene.
Despite rapid intervention by paramedics, a 61-year-old female teacher died at the scene from fatal wounds. A second staff member, a 44-year-old female teacher, received a severe stab wound to the chest and was airlifted to a regional hospital in Žilina. Officials later confirmed her condition had stabilized and her life was not in immediate danger.
The third victim, a female student, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to a specialized facility in Martin, where medical staff worked to save her life.
Police acted swiftly to secure the primary school, detaining the 13-year-old suspect near the scene. The Organized Crime Directorate has taken over the investigation, officially opening proceedings on charges of premeditated murder.
Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok arrived in Staškov to address reporters, confirming that the situation was brought under control quickly and that no further threat remained to the public. Minister Šutaj Eštok urged restraint regarding speculation while forensic teams examine the site and determine what prompted the assault.
"It is a live investigation and we will not comment on possible motives at this stage," stated Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok, calling for public patience while investigators work.
The attack sent ripples across Slovakia, prompting statements from top government officials. President Peter Pellegrini offered condolences to the victim's family and noted that the tragedy serves as a severe warning about safety and social dynamics in modern educational spaces. Education Minister Tomáš Drucker also visited the site, focusing efforts on offering psychological support to students, staff, and families affected by the trauma.
Classes were suspended as parents gathered to collect shaken children. While investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the attack, the tragedy has reopened urgent conversations across the country regarding behavioral warning signs, security protocols, and mental health support inside schools.
