LAKHIMPUR, Assam — A harrowing late-night accident along National Highway 15 claimed two lives after three freight trucks collided in the Kathhani area of Narayanpur, within Assam's Lakhimpur district, late Saturday night, August 15, 2026.
The violent impact reduced portions of the heavy vehicles to twisted metal, causing severe traffic disruptions on the busy arterial highway as local residents and emergency responders scrambled to reach those trapped inside.
According to eyewitnesses and local authorities, the pileup occurred around midnight when one of the speeding cargo vehicles reportedly lost control while trying to navigate a narrow stretch of the highway. It struck an oncoming truck head-on before a third heavy vehicle following closely behind rammed into the wreckage, creating a massive chain reaction.
The sheer force of the collision crushed the cabs of two of the trucks instantly. Nearby residents rushed out to the scene after hearing a deafening crash, attempting to pull driver and crew members from the wreckage before police units arrived.
"The sound of the collision echoed across the village. When we reached the spot, the cabins were completely crushed, and it took significant effort alongside the police to extricate the victims."— Local Eyewitness, Kathhani
Officers from the Narayanpur Police Station, alongside emergency service teams, carried out an extensive rescue operation using heavy machinery and gas cutters to clear the debris and extract the trapped occupants.
Medical teams pronounced two individuals dead at the scene due to fatal traumatic injuries. Their bodies were subsequently transferred to the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital for mandatory post-mortem procedures and formal identification.
Local police have registered a case and initiated a full investigation into the crash to determine whether mechanical failure, low visibility, or driver fatigue contributed to the deadly pileup. Meanwhile, highway patrol units worked through the early morning hours to clear the disabled trucks and restore normal traffic flow along NH-15.
