JHUNJHUNU, India — A horrific workplace disaster claimed the lives of eight laborers and left several others injured after heavy equipment accidentally came into contact with an overhead high-voltage power line in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district.
The tragic incident occurred in Chhapoli village, located under the jurisdiction of the Udaipurwati police station area, during a local road construction project.
According to local authorities, a group of workers was operating a gravel-mixing machine along a narrow stretch connecting Chhapoli to Kadamkund. The fatal accident unfolded when part of the construction machinery made contact with an overhead 11,000-volt (11-KV) high-tension power line.
The high-voltage current immediately charged the heavy metal equipment and the surrounding site, instantly striking the laborers working in close proximity. Five workers died instantly at the scene, while three others succumbed to their severe injuries after being rushed to the nearest hospital.
Local villagers and emergency responders rushed to the site immediately after the incident, assisting in rescuing the survivors and securing the area. Top regional officials, including the Jhunjhunu District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, inspected the location to oversee rescue and relief operations.
The tragedy triggered widespread grief across the district and prompted swift statements from top state leaders. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families, instructing officials to ensure immediate, high-quality medical treatment for the injured and ordering a comprehensive investigation into the disaster. State Energy Minister Heeralal Nagar also ordered technical experts to assess the site for potential safety violations or technical lapses, confirming that strict action will follow if negligence is established.
Following the official orders, a multi-agency inquiry team comprising technical experts from the state electricity board and local law enforcement has begun documenting the site to determine whether warning protocols or safety distances were violated during the roadwork's. Meanwhile, the administration has announced interim financial relief packages for the families of the deceased laborers to cover immediate funeral costs and support their dependents.
As regional labor unions demand stricter oversight for outdoor infrastructure projects, community members in Chhapoli have called for the urgent undergrounding or rising of high-voltage lines passing over frequently used rural roads to prevent similar catastrophes in the future.
