Key Highlights

  • Incident:A mother is dead and her daughter is missing after a suspected grizzly bear attack near Bella Coola.
  • Location:The attack occurred on the Snooka West Trail, about eight kilometers from the community.
  • Community Impact:This incident marks a second tragedy for Bella Coola in less than a year, raising concerns about human-wildlife interactions.

A tragic incident has unfolded near Bella Coola, British Columbia, where a mother has been confirmed dead and her nineteen-year-old daughter is missing following a suspected grizzly bear attack. The attack took place on the Snooka West Trail, located approximately eight kilometers east of the community, which is nestled in a remote area known for its stunning fjords and dense rainforest.

The victims have been identified by family members as Jenny Balcarras, an art therapist, and her daughter. They were reported missing on Sunday, prompting a search that led conservation officers to discover the mother’s body on Monday afternoon. The search for the daughter continues, with authorities employing traps in the area, although no bears have been captured as of Tuesday. Inspector Jeff Tyre of the BC Conservation Officer Service expressed condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with the families of the victims during this tragic time."

This incident is particularly painful for the community, as it echoes a previous bear attack that occurred nearly a year ago in November 2025. During that incident, a grizzly bear attacked a group of approximately twenty elementary school students and teachers, resulting in injuries to an adult and three children. Despite extensive search efforts and DNA testing of several trapped bears, the bear responsible for that attack was never located. The Nuxalk Nation, which has jurisdiction over the area, released a statement acknowledging the trauma this new incident will bring to the victims' families, survivors of the previous attack, and the broader community. Elected Chief Samuel Schooner remarked, "While the full circumstances are still unfolding, we understand first-hand the trauma this incident will inflict."

Bella Coola is home to around 2,100 residents and is situated at the end of a fjord along the central coast of British Columbia. The region, often referred to as the Great Bear Rainforest, is known for its abundant wildlife, including grizzly bears. While bear attacks are rare, the close proximity of human habitation to bear territories is a constant reality for the residents. The community has learned to coexist with these majestic creatures, but incidents like this serve as stark reminders of the potential dangers.

As the search for the missing daughter continues, conservation officers are working alongside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Traps have been set in the area, and any bears captured will be assessed to determine their involvement in the attack. If a bear is found to be responsible, it will be dispatched in accordance with provincial guidelines to ensure public safety. In the meantime, the Snooka trails have been closed, and the public is urged to stay away to allow officers to conduct their work safely.

For the family of Jenny Balcarras and her daughter, the days since Sunday have been filled with uncertainty and grief. For the community of Bella Coola, this incident represents a second wound in less than a year, a painful reminder that the wilderness they inhabit is not merely a backdrop but a living entity that can pose real dangers.
