Tragic Egypt Highway Crash Leaves 18 Dead—Exposing the Deadly Cost of Child Labor

ISMAILIA, Egypt — A devastating collision on a highway in northern Egypt on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 left at least 18 people dead and roughly 30 others injured. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through rural communities and reignited intense scrutiny over the dangerous conditions surrounding child labor and agricultural transport in the country.

According to local authorities and medical officials, the incident occurred near the Al-Dawawis area in the Ismailia governorate. Two pickup trucks carrying dozens of informal day laborers—mostly children and teenagers—collided and overturned while traveling to an agricultural farm.

Medical sources at the nearby Al-Qassasin Specialized Hospital confirmed that the vast majority of the deceased were young farm workers between the ages of 13 and 14, with the youngest victim reported to be just 10 years old.

Most of the victims hailed from impoverished farming villages in the nearby Sharqiya governorate. Like thousands of rural youth, they woke before dawn to board open-air pickup trucks heading to agricultural fields across the Nile Delta region.

"We have to wake up at 5:00 a.m. every day," said Jomana Waleed, a 16-year-old survivor who lost her sister in the crash. Speaking outside the hospital, Waleed recounted falling asleep from exhaustion moments before the impact. "Next thing I knew, we were flipped over on the ground."

Recurring highway casualties are driven by a combination of unregulated transport practices, widespread child labor, and weak law enforcement in rural areas. Informal transport networks rely heavily on overcrowded, unregulated pickup trucks as the primary low-cost option for moving seasonal farm crews.

This issue is compounded by prevalent child labor, with official figures estimating that at least 1.3 million minors in Egypt work predominantly in rural agriculture. Further elevating the danger is a persistent lack of safety oversight, as traffic laws are frequently loosely enforced across secondary rural roads and connecting highways.

Following public outcry, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi directed state authorities to conduct a full investigation into the collision. The Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Ministry of Labor announced emergency financial assistance for the families of the deceased and injured workers.

However, human rights advocates and economic analysts emphasize that financial compensation addresses only the symptoms. Informal labor accounts for nearly 67% of total employment in Egypt, leaving millions of unregistered workers—and young children—without legal safety protections, social insurance, or safe transportation guarantees.
